Harmony in action
'Our voices matter - not just in song, but in service'
By Gaye LaCasce, International President
In a world that moves fast and asks much, setting priorities isn’t just helpful - it’s essential. For members of Harmony, Inc., that means choosing connection, creativity, and kindness as guiding stars, even when life feels like a juggling act.
Given the interwoven commitments of career, caregiving, health, and personal growth, our days are full of competing needs. It’s easy to feel stretched thin, but it’s also possible to feel deeply fulfilled. The key lies in intentional choices - carving out time for what restores us, and letting go of what no longer serves.
Healthy living begins with harmony, within ourselves and with others. Whether it’s a morning walk, a mindful rehearsal, or laughter shared over dinner, wellness thrives when we make space for joy and renewal.
Volunteering is nourishment, too. It reminds us that our voices matter - not just in song, but in service. In Harmony, volunteering isn’t a side note, it’s a heartbeat. From mentoring new members and planning events to serving on committees and lifting others through music, every act of generosity strengthens our community and deepens our purpose. Harmony’s future depends on that generosity.
And then there’s quartet life - a commitment that runs deep. Singing in a quartet is more than blending notes; it’s blending lives. It’s showing up for each other through rehearsals, road trips, triumphs, and tears. Quartets become chosen family: places of trust, laughter, accountability, and love. In the midst of life’s demands, quartet time becomes sacred, a reminder that harmony is built one relationship at a time.
As we all prepare for Hershey (whether you’ll be with us in person or in spirit), let’s recommit to living with intention. Prioritize what fuels you. Sing what moves you. Serve with heart. Love like a quartet. Embrace friends old and new as we celebrate this annual reunion.
That is Harmony in action.

Seaside A Cappella makes history in Ireland!
First Harmony chorus at IABS convention brings home the gold
By Yvonne Rafuse, Area 1 Director
Seaside A Cappella made history at the Irish Association of Barbershop Singers (IABS) Convention and Contest in Killarney, Ireland, on October 11, bringing home the International Gold Medal!
One of the most meaningful moments of the weekend was being introduced on stage as proud members of Harmony, Inc. This was a milestone not just for our chorus, but for the entire organization.
As the first Harmony, Inc. chorus ever to compete at this international event, our participation inspired the Irish Association of Barbershop Singers to make a historic change to its eligibility rules. Previously, everyone on stage for international contests, including Musical Directors, had to be members in good standing of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), Sweet Adelines, or in a BHS Alliance organization that has an affiliation with BHS. When Seaside A Cappella expressed interest in the convention, hoping simply to sing and share our music on the international stage, the IABS made the groundbreaking decision to amend its rules to include Harmony, Inc. members.
With 53 singers on stage, and quartet Four Shore, we proudly represented Harmony, Inc. and our Area 1 community. Our chorus performance was a true celebration of harmony across generations, from our beloved Betty (age 93) to our youngest member, Wren (age 8), who made history as the youngest singer ever to win gold at the event.
This achievement marks a shining moment in Seaside A Cappella’s journey, and we are deeply grateful for the support of our chorus family, coaches Joe Cerruti and Cindy Hansen, the province of Nova Scotia, and the Harmony, Inc. community, who share this joy with us. |

Opening Night Celebration will feature special guests
By Teri Allred, Marketing Team Manager
We can’t wait to kick off our 2025 International Convention & Contests in Hershey, PA! Join us on Wednesday, November 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom for our opening night celebration of music, joy, and chocolate-infused harmony. We will honor incredible members and sing together.
Did you know that Hershey isn’t just known for its chocolate and roller coasters — but also for its award-winning barbershop ensembles?
Fresh off the contest stage, we will welcome the Fall 2025 Mid-Atlantic District Chorus Champions, Parkside Harmony! Under the artistic direction of Sean Devine and musical direction of Vince Sandroni, this Hershey-based ensemble proudly contributes to the thriving arts community in the Sweetest Place on Earth. Parkside Harmony will be joined by their sibling chorus, Parkside Melody, under the direction of Maddie Larrimore and 2019 Harmony Queen Melody Hine. This past July, Parkside Melody placed ninth at the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) International Convention in Denver.
Sean is excited to have the International Convention & Contests in his hometown. “Parkside Harmony and Parkside Melody are thrilled to welcome our Harmony, Inc. family back to our hometown! It’s an honor to be part of your Opening Celebration event on Wednesday night of the convention. We’ll be sharing a few songs from each ensemble — plus a combined piece before inviting you to join us in a fun finale number!
"We’ll also be around throughout the week to help however we can, and of course, we’ll be in the audience cheering YOU on during your performances.
"Want to know more about us? Follow us on Facebook or visit parksideharmony.org for more ways to connect,” he says.
You don’t want to miss this opening celebration, so join us in the Grand Ballroom! Can’t be there in person, but don’t want to miss a minute of the fun and excitement? You can purchase an all-access livestream of IC&C for $40. Learn more here.
Contestant Alert!
By Kathy Greason, ICJC
Two weeks 'til chocolate!
And with the contests approaching, an email with IC&C details specific to contestants has been sent to the contacts for the 24 choruses and 30 quartets we plan to see on stage in November. In an ideal world, all contacts received that email and shared the information with their ensembles. But in a world where electrons sometimes get misdirected and humans sometimes drop balls, we need fail-safes.
So if you are a contestant who hasn’t seen or heard information about things like stage viewing and contest patterns, the content of the emails to the contacts is available in pdf documents on our IC&C website. The documents are labeled Note to chorus contestants September 18 2025 and Note to quartet contestants September 18 2025. You can find them, along with maps, stage specs, and many other useful documents, at
Harmony, Incorporated - IC&C Contest Information.

"We stand as proof its true of what a dream can do ..." can certainly be said of the Heart of Pennsylvania chapter from Lewisburg, PA. Since chartering with Harmony in 2001, the Heart of Pennsylvania has competed in the Area 3 AC&C 17 times (2002-2007, 2009-2013, 2017-2019 and 2023-2025). Before 2025, their highest score was 783, achieved in 2024. This past May, they raised their score by more than 40 points to win two separate awards for improved performance at the Area 3 AC&C.
As a matter of fact, they came within one point of making the qualifying score for IC&C. There was a glorious uproar in the post-performance eval room when they learned how much they had improved their scores. Then they were awarded a wild card bid to compete in Hershey on the IC&C stage! In the afterglow of their achievement, they met to debrief over snacks and wine and enjoy watching the video of their award-winning performance.
They will be performing their AC&C set for us in Hershey and are excited to debut some changes after being inspired by the coaching feedback they’ve received. So, join me in welcoming to the IC&C stage for the very first time, contestant #9, Heart of Pennsylvania!

WE STILL NEED YOU!
Volunteers make sure our convention runs smoothly, for the benefit of all attendees. It's tons of fun to see and support everyone while you lend a helping hand. There are still jobs waiting to be filled on the Volunteer Signup, for the quartet semis, the chorus and the quartet finals contests. We can't do it without you!
Areas that still need help:
Warm-up Room Monitor: Our contestants depend on these important volunteers to provide direction and a calm setting before going on stage.
Photo Room Monitor: First volunteer keeps track of time, gives 3-minute warning, then directs contestant to warm-up room after allotted time; second volunteer assists photographer with props and costume adjustments and collecting photo order forms.
Ticket Sellers: We always have last-minute attendees who need to buy tickets at the door. You will be able to see part of the contest.
Education Classroom Helper: You'll introduce the class and presenter, note the number of attendees, and give the presenter a 5-minute warning. (It's the perfect way to help if you're already attending classes!)
Door Monitors: Collect tickets, tear off, and put in the box provided- check for AEPs- make sure doors are opened and closed in a timely manner for the contest.
Click here to see which job fits your schedule. You can also access the signup by clicking on Sign Me Up at the bottom of the Volunteer Page (accessed from the IC&C page on our website). If you have any questions about a volunteer job or signing up for one, please feel free to contact Debbie Wilson.

| Let's Sing a Tag at IC&C! |
|
|
|
Submitted by Dan Signor, your First Gentleman and Bellamy's proud Hippy (a.k.a. grampa)
I hope you are gearing up for an exciting IC&C! There are many people working tirelessly behind the scenes to bring us the best experience possible.
Speaking of experiences, if you happened to be at Harmony Fest West, you may have attended our Tag Contest - or at least heard about the great fun we had together (and the great prizes.) Well, you guessed it - we are bringing that same fun to IC&C, and we want YOU to be part of it.
The Tag Contest (Thursday evening, 8:00 p.m.) will be a casual and social event that focuses on fun, participation, and encouragement. We want YOU to grab three other folks (any gender quartet voicing is welcome) and learn a tag. Here are the rules:
1) No more than two members of an organized quartet can participate in the same Tag Quartet.
2) Tag Quartets (or a representative from each quartet) will meet with the organizers at the Tag Contest venue at 7:30.
3) At that time, submit your quartet name for the contest (how creative can you be?!) and enjoy the contest “briefing”.
4) Tag Quartet names will be placed in a hat and randomly drawn during the contest to determine order of performance (with an “on-deck” system… don’t miss the briefing!)
5) The contest will be judged by a panel of honorary judges, hand-picked for their positive attitudes and encouraging smiles.
6) If a quartet member has a conflict - need to leave early or come late - let us know and we'll try to accommodate you.
7) Tag Quartets will have two chances to sing their tag. That way, if you have a false start or are not happy with your hit, you get a free re-do, and you’ll be judged on that. Win-win situation!
Who can sing in a tag quartet? Well, everyone! At Harmony Fest West, even the official judging panel entered a quartet into the Tag Contest! It’s a safe space to try quartet singing – reach out to a Harmony Queen, a youth member (or a “not-so-youth” member), someone from the International Board of Directors – anyone you meet in Hershey!
Not only will there be prizes (and bragging rights, of course) for the top 3 quartets, but our winning quartet will perform their tag at the Saturday night banquet. If we ask really nicely, maybe they will even be willing to teach us all their tag so we can sing it together! And our prizes are being generously donated by the Mixed Barbershop Harmony Association.
The ball is in your court. Find a tag you love and reach out right away to three other voices. Or if you’d rather, find taggers once you arrive at IC&C. However you make it happen, we want YOU to sing a tag in Hershey! Visit the Tag Contest Info Table in the Registration vicinity for more information.

Mid-Atlantic District honors Harmony's Roxanne Powell
By Teri Allred, Marketing Team Manager
Harmony, Inc.’s HI Note and The Key-Note Editor, Roxanne Powell, received the prestigious Mid-Atlantic District’s Hall of Honor Award during the Mid-Atlantic District Fall Convention in Wildwood Crest, NJ. This award was presented by Hall of Honor Chairman Richard Lewellen.
The purpose of the Mid-Atlantic District Hall of Honor (HOH) is to “give recognition to individuals who have made exceptional, long-standing, unselfish, dedicated, devoted and uplifting contributions to the District and its Members.”
I can think of no finer individual than Roxanne to receive such an honor. We all know and love Roxanne for her many years of service to Harmony, Inc. as a member of the International Board of Directors and long-time editor of both the HI Note and The Key-Note publications. These communications to our membership ensure not only that vital information is shared about our organization, but that we also learn about and celebrate our members through engaging articles.
Roxanne has been a member of Harmony, Inc. for 12 years. She is also a founding member and former president of the Mixed Barbershop Harmony Association, a founding member and original "Registration Guru" of the Women's Harmony Brigade (now Treble Brigade), and the musical director of Full Circle Mixed Voice Harmony.
Her nomination for the Mid-Atlantic District HOH recognizes her enthusiastic and effective advocacy of barbershop harmony since being introduced to it in 1977. She is widely known for her talent as a hostess and communication expert, getting the word out about barbershop events and encouraging a wide-ranging participation. She served as editor for the Mid’l Antics from 2011-2018 and managed the transition to an online publication, saving thousands of dollars in printing and mailing costs. Roxanne spreads the love of harmony with her participation in multiple Barbershop organizations, including Mixed Barbershop Harmony Association (MBHA), serving as president, and with Harmony, Inc., where she served as VP Education and continues to serve as editor for the online publications.
Richard Lewellen observes, “Roxanne is one of a select few women inducted into the Mid-Atlantic District Hall of Honor since women became eligible post the 2018 'Everyone in Harmony' initiative of the Barbershop Harmony Society. She is also that rare leader who has prominently contributed to the development of three barbershop organizations - The Mixed Barbershop Harmony Association (MBHA), The Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), and Harmony, Inc. (HI).”
Please join me in congratulating Roxanne on this prestigious recognition!

| Reminder: Report Performance Activity! |
|
|
|

MUST YOU REPORT YOUR PERFORMANCE?
YES!
Harmony, Inc. makes reporting simple with our umbrella license agreements.
By Karen Cross, Copyright and Licensing Coordinator
Paying for music and the right to perform it - can be a complicated concept! Remembering to report it, however, is not.
Harmony, Inc. and its Areas and Chapters are required to pay fees to three separate U.S. music licensing agencies (ASCAP, BMI, & SESAC) whenever we perform music at live events that we organize i.e., Chapter Shows, AC&C's, and IC&C.
If your chapter had a performance or show that was attended by the public, regardless of whether or not you sold tickets, accepted donations in lieu of tickets, or performed for free, you can fulfill this requirement by reporting your activity on Form HAR-122 ... UNLESS you have your own accounts in place with ASCAP, BMI, & SESAC.
By completing Form HAR-122, (found in the Members Only section of the website and embedded in this sentence) your chapter will fall under umbrella agreements with these licensing organizations. So, instead of your chapter paying fees directly to ASCAP/BMI/SESAC, you can submit your information to Harmony, Inc., and we will report on your behalf. Your chapter/area will then be billed for your portion of fees paid under Harmony, Inc.’s licensing agreements. The fees will typically be less than paying directly to these organizations to perform your music.
Canadian Chapters/Areas must report their performance activity to Entandem, with whom we do not currently have an umbrella license. This reporting must be done independently by each chapter/area; consequently, HAR-122 is not applicable in Canada.
Please review the linked form and familiarize yourself with the information. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you submit the form within 10 days of the event. Our quarterly reporting deadlines are 15 days after the end of the previous quarter. We cannot report for you if we do not have the information by the 10th of the month.
If you have questions about completing this form, please contact the Finance Assistant at financeoffice@harmonyinc.org. Questions about this information? Contact the Copyright & Licensing Coordinator at recording@harmonyinc.org or the Finance Assistant at financeoffice@harmonyinc.org.

Gamification in Action
WHAT?
Sometimes members don’t follow through, even when we think expectations are clear. Reminders pile up, but motivation doesn’t always follow.
SO WHAT?
That’s where gamification comes in. A playful challenge, visible progress, or small reward can turn “should” into “want to,” helping people build habits and feel connected.
NOW WHAT?
If you’ve noticed energy dipping—in yourself, your quartet, or your chorus—consider adding a spark of play. Read on for practical examples of gamification that you can adapt right away.
